I here humbly present you BESCII, the PETSCII based font I made inspired by Basic Engine, with a few improvements over the original C64 one:
https://damianvila.com/bescii/bescii.ttf
I really like PETSCII, but some of the lowercase are all over the place. It's also really limited. I wanted to correct a few things, and expand it, to reach a broader audience. The features of BESCII are:
- Improved x-height in lower case letters.
- Mac Roman and Windows 1252 glyphs included.
- All Western European languages included.
- Full kana support (hiragana and katakana).
- Some greek letters included.
- Most PETSCII symbols + some Amstrad CPC 464 too.
- Pixel art for games
Regarding the last point, I have no idea how it can be mapped, but, just for fun, I included pixel art in Unicode's Private Use Area, to create several different styles of games:
- Cars for racing game (Sprint 2 style).
- Materials, terrain and characters for adventure game (Ultima style).
- Space game (Space Invaders style).
- Pac-man game.
- Namco style numbers (I really like those, way more than the C64 ones).
I left a few reserver glyphs, just in case (and more can be added to the PUA if needed).
This is a version 1.0. It can be expanded and improved if needed.
Here you have screenshots of all the groups:
The font is licensed with a CC0 1.0 Universal license. Basically, public domain, and no attribution needed. Do whatever you want with it (I had fun creating it):
Enjoy!
